We understand you may be afraid to visit the dentist, and surprisingly a lot of people are. We want you to know that you are not alone, the team here at 7 to 7 Dentist are here to support you. Your dental appointment does not have to be scary or uncomfortable, with 7 to 7 Dentist you can enjoy a relaxing, pain-free experience. How? Well, we have an ace up our sleeve. It is called Happy Gas.

So, What Is It?

Happy gas, or sometimes called laughing gas, is a chemical called Nitrous Oxide which is completely safe to inhale that pretty much tells your body to calm down. It makes you feel relaxed, happy, giggly and helps to get rid of any anxiety. It is an effective and fast working common sedative with minimal side effects that leaves your body very quickly afterwards. The best part is, it is completely safe for adults and children as well!

Who Needs It?

Happy gas is perfect for people who have anxiety when they come to the dentist, if they have a phobia of needles (Like me), have a low pain threshold, or have had a terribly busy day at work and wants a little extra fun at their dental appointment afterwards.

If you have a wiggly child who can’t sit still in the dental chair for their appointment, happy gas works well for children too. It helps to calm them down and make their dental appointments easier which gives them a good experience and prevents a future fear of the dentist.

How Does It Work?

The happy gas goes through a nasal mask that is placed gently on your nose. These masks come in different sizes to ensure a comfortable fit no matter the size of the nose. As you safely inhale the happy gas, the dentist can control how much you inhale to get you into a very happy, relaxed state. Once the appointment is over, the dentist will slowly reduce the amount you are inhaling until you are inhaling normal oxygen again.

Once we turn off the happy gas, it leaves your body very quickly. We like to keep you around for approximately twenty minutes after, just to ensure it is all out of your system, and then you are free to drive away and go about your daily life again.

How Will This Affect My Appointment?

You will still receive some numbing gel and local anaesthetic to relieve and prevent any pain where the dentist will be working in your mouth. The whole team at 7 to 7 Dentist care about every person that walks through our doors and have devised a technique that numbs your mouth in such a way that you won’t feel anything at all, which has surprised a lot of patients! You will remain fully conscious during your time on happy gas and will be able to respond to any questions and tell the dentist he has fantastic jokes – even if they’re not. Happy gas does not inhibit the ability to talk, swallow or spit during appointments, and also helps people who have a very strong gag reflex who have trouble with things like x-ray’s being in their mouth.

But Hang On, What Side Effects?

You may be asking, having spotted the ‘minimal side effects’ line above. There can be some minimal side effects while on happy gas including:
and/or vomiting.

  • Light-headedness
  • Feeling of Floating
  • Giggling/Laughing
  • Tingling in the hands and body
  • Fatigue
  • Shivering

After your appointment when the dentist turns the happy gas off, if you move/are moved too quickly straight after, you may also experience some minor side effects including:

  • Nausea and/or Vomiting

It is recommended to avoid heavy meals right before your appointment, to reduce the chance of Nausea and/or vomiting.
